Charcoal

This assignment was to explore the medium of charcoal. I chose to explore it by creating a still life. 

Photography

This assignment was to explore photography. This is something that all students have thanks to cell phones. 

Cardboard Sculptures

For this assignment we created cardboard sculptures that were five times as large as an object. Example being a pencil.

Abstract Self Portraits

For this assignment we created a normal looking self portrait as well as an abstract one.

Instructions and guided practice with drawing basic shapes and forms

Careers in Art

Guided Notes on some example careers that involve art

Students create a four flap foldable that gives information about 4 art related careers (Avg. Salary, Level of Education Needed, Short Description)

Scale

Guided practice on the differnces between scale and proportion. As well as how an artist can use them.

Students create drawing of a small creature growing to enormous size (Like Godzilla)

Students draw what they would do if they had the ability to shrink (Ex: Ride on the back of a duck)

Art Critique

Class discussion of the steps of an art critique (Description, Analysis, Interpretation, Evaluation)

Guided practice of an art critique

Students perfom a gallery walk, critiquing artwork around the classroom

Portraits

Guided discussion of the history of portraits and thier purpose throughout history

Students create portraits of animals inspired by artist Olivia Beaumont

Students create an artist statement explaining thier historical inspiration and thier creative process

Storytelling

Students create a collage that aims to tell a story without having the story written

North Carolina Iconography

Students independently research and draw a map of North Carolina. Marking notable landmarks, sports teams, universities, and state symbols

Comic Books & Visual Storytelling

Guided discussion of the comic book medium

Students create an original story and then turn that into a comic book or graphic novel

Resize Cardboard Sculpture

Guided review of how to scale up or down objects and images

Students create sculptures of ordinary objects and increasing thier size by a scale factor to create giant sculptures (I.E Ken Burn's Balloon Dog)

Guided review of the color wheel, relationships between colors and three basic color schemes (Analogous, Complentary, Monochromatic)

Emotions

Guided practice on how color can be used to represent an emotion or to enhance the viewers emotion

Independently, students create caricatures for 6 emotions. Each having a distinct main color.

Concept Art

Classroom discussion of what a concept artist is and what their role is

Students, in groups, create a plot either original, or based on a property in the public domain. Following this, groups will create artworks that depict the main characters, five significant events during the plot and the setting of the story

Students present what they have created while the rest of the room act as film producers who get a vote to either fund the project, or to not

Motion & Gesture

Students create quick gesture drawings based on an athelete

Paiper Mache

Students use armature wire, tin foil, and papier-mache to construct interlocking figures inspired by James Grashow’s “The Great Monkey Project.”

Students create sketches and measurements of how they will construct their sculptures

Perspective

Guided practice and instruction where students draw a road in a city using one point perspective

Guided practice and instruction where students draw a building using two point perspective

Students draw and color a room using one point perspective (I.E Vincent Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles)

Native American Totem Pole

Students complete an article with questions explaining the purpose and symbolism being native american totem poles

Students create schematics for building thier own section of a totem pole. Selecting the animal depicted as well as colors and patterns to be used

Students each individually create a section of a totem pole. Connecting them at the end of the project

Students write an artist statement explaining thier creative process and uses of symbolism

North Carolina Iconography

Students independently research and draw a map of North Carolina. Marking notable landmarks, sports teams, universities, and state symbols

American Revolution

Guided research on propaganda by both sides during the American Revolution

Students create four preliminary sketches for a piece of propaganda by either colonist supporting revolutionor loyalists during the American Revolution. Include a sketch of the following: A Depiction of events (Ex: The Boston Massacre) Poster Ex: a call to arms to join either side Newspaper cartoon

Students create a propanda poster either supporting or condemning succession from England during the American Revolution
